Past and future
Established in 1998, the NRFTA was formed from four significant regional film collections which were housed by Teesside University, Tyne and Wear Archives, Trade Films and Cumbria Archives Service.
As a commitment by the University, state of the art environmentally controlled vaults were constructed for the NRFTA on the University Campus in 2003, and were formally opened the following year. This became the foundation for the ongoing presence of the NRFTA at the University of Teesside.
In December 2003, NRFTA Ltd. was formed as a company limited by guarantee (no. 04994213), which made the archive an independent legal entity. In February 2006, responsibility for providing a moving image archive service to Cumbria passed from the NRFTA to the North West Film Archive.
Teesside University has been a major partner throughout the NRFTA’s existence. Today, the University remains our core sponsor. We also receive funding from Northern Film and Media, other grant making bodies and from commercial revenue such as licensing footage to broadcasters.
The NRFTA is a registered charity (1119435) and has recently become registered for VAT (VAT Number: 106 6326 35).
