Search Your Film Archives
The Screen Heritage UK Programme ensures that everyone in Britain will be able to find out about their film heritage for free from wherever they live regardless of where the material is held via a new cataloguing and online access drive – Search Your Film Archives. Joining forces as never before, the national and regional film archives have created this resource to give the public online access to information about film archives across the UK and is for everyone; from those curious about their region or family, academics and students undertaking research, to film makers looking for background material. Some films are available to view online. It is the first time that regional and national moving image collections have been brought together in this way, enabling global access to the wealth of film treasures that are preserved in film archives throughout the country.
The Screen Heritage UK Programme has invested almost £0.25m in the NRFTA. Over the last year, we’ve been able to extend the amount of storage space in our vaults to accommodate the transfer of over 9000 film cans and videos previously held in the Discovery Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne. We’ve undertaken a programme of cataloguing and condition checking which has informed our understanding of the quality and regional significance of the collections.
We are transferring key films to a digital format so that they can be used for study, screenings and broadcast. You can view a number of these film highlights in our Explore section of the website. Also check out Eddie’s blog, A day in the life of a film archivist, to get a flavour of work behind the scenes during this period.
The Screen Heritage UK Programme is a partnership between the British Film Institute, Screen Yorkshire and English regional film archives to safeguard the future of the UK’s national and regional film archives funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
We look forward to sharing more of our discoveries with you as we continue our collections work.
